Hike via the Gatterl to the Zugspitze.

Gatterl route to the Zugspitze

The hike via the Gatterl to the Zugspitze is a technically easy and extremely rewarding tour for mountain and nature lovers. The tour is also suitable for children who enjoy exercise and hiking.

Zugspitze über das Gatterl

The hike starts in Ehrwald, a picturesque village in Tyrol, Austria. From there, the "Gatterlroute" leads via the Knorrhütte and from there, together with the Reintalroute, to the Zugspitzplatt and on to the summit. On the way, you pass alpine meadows, rock formations and impressive views of the surrounding mountain landscape.

We begin our tour with a cable car ride to the Ehrwalder Alm at an altitude of 1502 m. From there we continue our hike to the Pestkapelle at 1617 m and to the Hochfeldernalm at 1732 m. Via the Max-Klotz-Steig we reach the Joch "Am Brand" at 2120 m and hike slightly downhill to the Feldernjöchl at 2041 m and to the "Gatterl" at 2024 m. We then walk along the flat "Plattsteig" trail to the Knorrhütte. From there we follow the Zugspitzplatt to the Sonnalpin at 2576 m. From here we have the option of either taking a secured path to the summit of the Zugspitze or taking the cable car to the summit plateau. We start the descent with the Ehrwalder Zugspitzbahn.
